Cristiano Ronaldo dreams Hollywood as next career
Cristiano Ronaldo is eyeing a post-soccer career in Hollywood. The Portugal captain and Juventus forward disclosed this on Saturday at the Dubai International Sports Conference.
He said that when he eventually retires from football, he would like to test his skills as an actor.
“One of the things that I seek to challenge myself in, for example, is acting in a movie,” the Portugal captain said, in a report by ESPN.
Ronaldo, ranked as the world’s No.2 forward in ESPN FC 100, said that — while he is in a position to hang up his boots at any time — he expects to continue playing for the foreseeable future.
He added that he also wants to “continue my studies after retiring from football.”
Ronaldo recently became the only player in Europe’s top five leagues to hit double figures in all competitions in each of the last 15 seasons. He won four of his five Ballon d’Or awards and three Champions League titles while with Real Madrid before joining Juventus in the summer of 2018. He won his first Champions League trophy with Manchester United before his move to Spain.
On the international level, he is one goal shy of 100 for his career with Portugal.
2,500 illegal structures demolished in Lekki, Lagos by Task force.
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit at the weekend demolished over 2,500 illegal structures comprising shanties, kiosks and containarised shops in the Lekki Waterside area of the state.
The structures were demolished during an enforcement exercise carried out by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit.
Before the exercise, the structures were occupied by business operators including iron benders, mechanics, food/fruits vendors and others who were issued a seven-day “Removal Notice” by the state government to remove their property and vacate the entire area.
The notice expired last Thursday and this ushered in the demolition exercise.
The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the exercise was carried out to prepare for the construction of a coastal road which would serve as an alternative route for the Lekki-Epe Expressway and enhance free flow of traffic on that corridor.
He said the area was an eye-sore as the occupants littered the environment with refuse and waste materials.

Nobody Should Pay N50 Charges On POS Transactions, Says CBN
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has clarified the issue of payments of N50 charges by merchants who use Point of Sale (POS) machines for cashless transactions, insisting that nobody should pay extra on goods and services.
The CBN explained that the N50 stamp duty is a fee regulated by an act that directs merchants to pay all necessary taxes as regulated by government agencies.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Business Morning programme, the CBN Director of Payment System Management, Musa Jimoh, said the apex bank issued a circular and merchants have misinterpreted the directive.
“Stamp duty has been misinterpreted, our circular that talks about merchants paying stamp duties according to the law do not say that the stamp duty should be paid by the consumer; that is a misrepresentation of CBN directive. What our directive says is that merchants should pay all necessary tax as regulated by government agencies including stamp duty.
“What we told the merchants is that we would like the banks to ensure that the merchants comply with this directive by ensuring that every single payment that customers make to them, the merchants pay the regulated stamp duty of N50.
“What has happened is that they have actually transferred this fee blatantly and openly to the consumers; this is very wrong. No single individual should pay N50 in addition to the cost of the goods.
He stated that “Stamp duty is not to be paid by individuals that are consuming the goods and services of the merchants, the merchants who are receiving the money are the ones who are supposed to pay.”
Mr. Jimoh explained that because the stamp duty is not regulated by the CBN, there are no plans to stop stamp duties.
“Stamp duty is not a CBN regulated fee, it is a fee regulated by an act, and so we can’t change or push anything in that direction.
To this, the stamp duty remains and cannot be changed by the CBN, what we are doing is to ensure that the institutions we regulate (the banks) become more responsible to ensure that these fees are collected and given to the government.

LASU To Get Hostels For First Time In 36 Years
Students and staff of the Lagos State University (LASU) can now beam with smiles as the state government is set to construct a 8,272 unit of hostels on the school campus.
This move is the first of its kind since the creation of the institution in the Ojo area of the state 36 years ago.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement with six private property developers to deliver the project in the next 18 months.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Gboyega Akosile, the deal which will lead to the construction of six blocks of Hall of Residence, was wrapped under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) policy of the State.
Although the concessions will run for 35 years, it is expected that 30 per cent of the school’s 26,000 student-population will be served when finally completed and delivered in 2021.
“The partnership we just sealed with the six private investors is strategic, because it is going to strengthen our capacity as a Government to scale up education quality and bring about improved academic performance of students.
“It will also help LASU in terms of global rating and outlook. We are using this model as a test case, which governments from other parts of the country will come and emulate. I believe we can deliver on this project and set a precedent that will change the course of tertiary education for good,” he stated.

Miss America 2020: Biochemist wins crown after on-stage experiment
A Virginian biochemist has been named winner of Miss America 2020 after performing a live science experiment that defied stereotypes of the contest.
Camille Schrier defeated 50 women to take the crown at Thursday's final in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Wearing a lab coat, the 24-year-old impressed judges with a chemistry demonstration in the talent show.
Ms Schrier won a $50,000 (£38,000) scholarship and a one-year role as Miss America.

Miss America waves bye bye to bikinis
What are beauty pageants really like for black women?
In her acceptance speech, Ms Schrier said she hoped to "break stereotypes about what it means to be a Miss America in 2020".
Ms Schrier has two undergraduate science degrees and is studying a doctorate in pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University.
She reportedly told the celebrity panel, comprised of Kelly Rowland, Queer Eye's Karamo Brown and Superstore actress Lauren Ash, that "Miss America is someone who needs to educate".
In her role as Miss America, Ms Schrier will spend a year advocating for Mind Your Meds, a drug safety and prevention programme.
Ms Schrier's victory is expected to be viewed as another progressive step away from Miss America's traditional beauty contest format.
Since 2018 the competition has attempted to re-brand its image, scrapping its swimwear segment and appearance-based judging criteria.
Instead, contenders showcase their talents and are interviewed about their passion, intelligence and understanding of the Miss America role.
"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outwards, physical appearance. That's huge," said former Miss America winner Gretchen Carlson, who announced the reforms in 2018.
Organisers say the changes have encouraged more young women to participate.
Earlier this year Ms Schrier, a self-confessed "quirky scientist", told the BBC she wanted to "break people's stereotypes" of those competing for the Miss America title.
She said her science experiment - the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide - was a "big factor" in her winning Miss Virginia in June this year.
While acknowledging there was still "controversy" over these types of competitions, Ms Schrier said Miss America has "re-branded" and was being more "progressive" by focusing more on women's achievements than appearances.
Kwara government reduces ministries to 16
The Kwara State Government has pruned the ministries in the state to 16, from the 19 it inherited from the past administration.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Harriet Afolabi-Oshatimehin, told a news briefing on Wednesday that the state executive council ratified the merger of some ministries and creation of one other at its maiden meeting held just before the budget presentation by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Afolabi-Oshatimehin, who was joined at the briefing by two other commissioners – Dr Raji Razaq (Health) and Mrs Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, (Tertiary Education) – said the measure was to cut cost and strengthen efficiency in service delivery to the people.
“Today, December 18, 2019, the inaugural council meeting of the state executive council took place. Council deliberated on the proposed 2020 appropriation bill. It was adopted for His Excellency’s presentation at the Kwara State House of Assembly. The second thing that was deliberated upon was the restructuring (merger) of some ministries and the creation of a new ministry,” Afolabi-Oshatimehin told reporters.
She said the old Ministry of Culture and Tourism had been collapsed into the Ministry of Information and Communications to form a wholesome Ministry of Communications, while the Ministry of Industry and Solid Mineral and Commerce and Cooperative had been merged to become Ministry of Enterprise.
The old Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and Ministry of Finance are now Ministry of Finance and Planning, while the former Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has been collapsed into the Ministry of Works and Transport, she added.

US President Donald Trump Impeached
President Donald Trump was impeached for abuse of power in a historic vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, setting up a Senate trial on removing him from office after three turbulent years.
By a 230 to 197 vote in the Democratic-majority House, the 45th US president becomes just the third occupant of the White House in American history to be impeached.
Democrats said they had “no choice” but to formally charge the Republican president, whose impeachment along stark party lines places an indelible stain on his record while driving a spike ever deeper into the US political divide.
“What is at risk here is the very idea of America,” said Adam Schiff, the lawmaker who headed the impeachment inquiry, ahead of the vote.
Trump will now stand trial in the Senate, where his Republicans hold a solid majority and are expected to exonerate him.
The House vote came four months after a whistleblower blew open the scandal of Trump pressuring Ukraine’s president to investigate his potential White House challenger in 2020, the veteran Democrat Joe Biden.
After a marathon of 10 hours of debate, lawmakers were to vote quickly on the second article of impeachment facing Trump — for obstructing the congressional probe into his Ukraine dealings by blocking the testimony of subpoenaed White House aides.
Despite testimony from 17 officials that Trump leveraged his office for domestic politic gain, the president maintained his innocence throughout the impeachment inquiry — furiously denouncing it as a “witch hunt,” an “attempted coup” and on Wednesday as an “assault on America.”
Trump spent the first part of the day holed up at the White House, sending out tweets reflecting his frustration, anger, and predictions of revenge in the 2020 election.
But as the vote took place, the 73-year-old was on the friendlier territory.
In an extraordinary split-screen moment, while the House was casting votes to impeach him, thousands of Trump’s most fervent supporters were cheering him at a rally in Michigan where he railed against a “radical left” he said was “consumed with hatred.”
Democrats are “trying to nullify the ballots of tens of millions of patriotic Americans,” he charged.
“Four more years, four more years,” the crowd chanted back.

JUST IN: Buhari not fighting corruption, says Ango Abdullahi
Chairman, Northern Elders’ Forum, (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi said on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari is not fighting corruption in the country, saying “prisons ought to be full by now, if he is truly fighting it.”
Ango Abdullahi stated categorically that, “we have now seen corruption on a massive scale, and nobody is doing anything about it”.
He stated this while fielding questions from Journalists on Tuesday in Kaduna shortly after opening ceremony of a public lecture entitled, “Education as an instrument for national integration: The northern Nigerian Crisis.”
According to the elder statesman, if President Buhari was committed to fighting corruption, the nation’s courts and prisons would have been congested with corrupt politicians.
He said many corrupt politicians are going about freely because APC has forgiven their sins, pointing out that the case that readily came to mind is that of Senator Danjuma Goje whose ‘sin’ was allegedly forgiven by APC.
He said, “The President said he is fighting corruption, but I don’t believe him because, if he is fighting corruption, our courts and prisons should be full by now. This is because corruption is everywhere.
“You don’t just pick one case and make it a universal example of fighting corruption. We have just seen the conviction of Orji Uzor Kalu and it is becoming something that the world should know, when there are so many people with seventy something billion with them. Those people should be in the same prison with Uzor Kalu.
“And in any case, if you want to say that, Uzor Kalu had committed an offence, but here is a national chairman of a party, the President’s party who pronounces that, don’t worry how much you have stolen somewhere else; as long as you come and say you are a member of APC, you are forgiven. A good example of that is former Governor Danjuma Goje. It was the Attorney General of the Federation himself that went to court to say, they were withdrawing the case from the court. And his offences are not different from Orji Uzor Kalu’s and many others that were reported.

Recall that Oshiomhole had at the weekend alleged that Obaseki failed to learn how to win elections while under his tutelage. Obaseki said he did not only win his unit and ward during the last general election but also polled more votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 elections than Oshiomhole when he was governor during the 2015 elections. “In 2015, when Oshiomhole was governor, he polled 208,469 votes against Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 286,869, with a 78,400 deficit. While in 2019, under Obaseki, the APC scored 267,842, while the PDP got 275,691, with a 7,849 marginal loss," he said.
The call was made by Osagie, He disclosed this in a statement over the recent happenings in the state. “Even his allegory of politics being like a forest with dangerous animals is a poor excuse to continue to perpetuate thuggery and the keep the collective patrimony under the control of a few greedy and violent people in the name of winning units and ward elections.

Malami, who is also the Minister of Justice, said this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Gwandu.
Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), had written a letter to Malami, requesting him to order the release of Sowore.
Falana said that his client was being illegally detained as there was no court order to that effect.
He said that two lawyers in the team visited the DSS headquarters in Abuja to demand Sowore’s release but were advised to direct their request to Malami.
Responding to Falana, Malami said he can’t order Sowore's release before hearing from the court as he could not take a unilateral decision.
He said, “When parties submit their issues for determination to a court of law, they lack exclusivity of decision over such issues without recourse to the court.
“We remain guided by the established tradition and will not take unilateral decision without recourse to the rule of law.”
Sowore was rearrested on December 6 by the DSS barely 24-hours after he was released on bail.
He is yet to be told the reason for his rearrest.
